SENIOR Physiotherapist

Derek Lee

Derek is a Physiotherapist at PhysioFirst. He graduated with First-Class Honours from University of Queensland, Australia under the SingHealth Scholarship programme. From 2012, he spent 6 years at the busiest hospital in Singapore, the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) where he cared for patients in the Rehabilitation Unit, the Burns and Plastics Unit, Orthopaedic Surgery and the Musculoskeletal Outpatient Clinic.

Derek specialises in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and has a special interest in treating patients with hip, knee and ankle injuries. He is a firm believer in education, never being satisfied with status quo, he constantly upgrades his skills by attending courses around the world.

In his time at SGH, he has presented his work at various meetings such as the 40th Singapore Orthopaedic Association Annual Scientific Meeting, the 2017 SingHealth-Duke-NUS Surgical and Anaesthesia Congress and the 2017 Team Excellence Innovation and Quality Circles Assessment. His team was awarded Gold for his work in reducing the length of stay post total hip replacement via the direct anterior approach.

Derek constantly evaluates ways of innovating for better patient care. He was part of the winning team at the inaugural 2017 SingHealth Hackathon with a game-based application which aims to aid in the rehabilitation of patients post total knee replacement. He also had the opportunity to partner various adult reconstruction surgeons to develop the Osteoarthritis Mobile Application and spearheaded the protocol for early ambulation of Total Hip Replacement via the Direct Anterior Approach. (this was strongly covered in various media outlets).

Derek has also given various ergonomic and manual handling consultancy talks at various organisations. They would include AMGEN Manufacturing, Meiden Singapore, KONE Elevators and the Singapore Institute of Technology. He was also part of the team that provided physiotherapy coverage in the 2016 ASEAN Paralympics Game held in Singapore.

Since 2018, Derek has had the privilege to setup multiple Physiotherapy clinics and to work alongside like-minded Allied Health Professionals. Derek has also been busy with organising professional upgrading courses so that many more Physiotherapists will be able to grow in their knowledge base.

He is blessed with three beautiful kids and a husband to a supportive wife. In his free time, he enjoys a good run and taking his camera out for a shoot. Derek finds joy partnering in his patients’ recovery as they achieve their goals.

During his time at SKH, Rong Gene worked extensively with a wide range of patients—supporting recovery from post-surgical procedures, managing neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, and helping older adults maintain mobility and independence. His dedication and quality of care were recognised with both the Silver and Gold Star Awards under the Singapore Health Quality Service Awards (SHQSA), a prestigious honour presented by SingHealth for exceptional service in healthcare.

Now at PhysioX, Rong Gene focuses primarily on musculoskeletal conditions, working with a diverse patient group—from elderly individuals to high-performance athletes. He has a strong interest in pain management and sports performance, and is especially experienced in post-surgical rehabilitation.

Before your first visit

Can’t see your question here? Message us on WhatsApp and a Physiotherapist will reply.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No. You can book directly. If you have scans or a surgeon’s notes, bring them along.

How do I book?

Book online with Derek or Gene to choose a slot yourself, send a booking request, or message us on WhatsApp at +65 8243 9620.

What should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing so we can see and test the area that hurts.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people feel a difference within 2–3 sessions. We’ll give you an estimate after your first assessment.

Can I claim from insurance?

We provide itemised receipts. Check your policy for outpatient physiotherapy cover.

Do you do home visits?

Yes. Home Therapy is for people who find it hard to get to the clinic, including the first weeks after surgery.

Should I start physiotherapy before my surgery?

Often, yes. Building strength and range beforehand usually makes recovery easier. Bring your surgeon’s plan and we’ll work around it.

Do you treat children and older adults?

Yes, from teenage athletes to post-surgery rehab in later life.
