Mommy’s thumb: wrist pain in new parents

Physiotherapist treating a patient's neck

Mommy’s thumb (De Quervain’s tenosynovitis) is pain at the base of the thumb and side of the wrist. It is common in the months after having a baby, when lifting and holding become constant.

Small changes that help

  • Lift your baby with your palms facing up, using your whole forearm.
  • Support your arm with a pillow when feeding.
  • Rest the thumb between tasks rather than gripping for long periods.

A Physiotherapist can show you exercises, advise on a splint if needed, and help you keep doing what you need to do with less pain.

This article is general information, not a diagnosis. If you're in pain, a Physiotherapist can assess you properly and tell you what will help.
